Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return

One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
