The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
