Jair Bolsonaro taken into custody after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
