As any significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
